Trustee (Clinical)

EDP Drug & Alcohol Services is a thriving charity, working in Devon and Dorset with people affected by drug and alcohol use and their families. Increasingly we work with people that have a range of challenges impacting on their wellbeing, building on their strengths, hopes, aspirations and hidden talents. Simply put, we help people to live fulfilling lives.

The charity has steadily grown over the past two years, and we have an ambitious strategy for the future that aims to consolidate this growth, whilst continuing to focus on further growth and innovation. To support us in this task, the Board of Trustees is seeking to appoint a new Trustee who shares EDP’s values and has a strong commitment to our supportive work in the field of substance misuse recovery.

We have recently taken on additional clinical duties (including prescribing controlled drugs) so to support us in delivering these services we’re looking for a Trustee with a clinical background who is able to oversee our clinical governance, and reassure the Board of Trustees that there is compliance with regulatory bodies and regulations.

This is a great opportunity to make a positive and fulfilling contribution to our beneficiaries, and offers a chance for personal and professional development.

What the role will involve

A role of a Trustee is to ensure that EDP Drug and Alcohol Services fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries, and delivers on its vision, mission and values. Trustees help to guide the strategic direction of the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, and evaluating progress against targets.

There are four annual board meetings (usually between 5pm and 7pm in Exeter) which you will need to attend. You’ll also need to attend four Clinical Governance Sub-Committee meetings per year which are usually held between 10am and 12pm in Exeter. There is also one annual ‘away day’ which is also usually held in Exeter.

The role is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although reasonable expenses for travel may be claimed.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for an individual with a clinical background and current or recent knowledge of clinical governance and regulations, including those of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), General Medical Council (GMC) and Care Quality Commission (CQC). You’ll be familiar with prescribing and controlled drug regulations and will be able to lend your expertise in this area to ensure that EDP meets the required standard of compliance.

Personally, you’ll have a strong empathy for the mission and values of EDP. You’ll have experience working at management level and will be happy to constructively support and challenge our senior leadership team to ensure that EDP remains true to these values. You’ll be able to demonstrate experience of exercising sound judgement and effective decision making, and will have an understanding of the responsibilities of trusteeship.

However, previous board experience is not necessary, and we welcome applications from a range of backgrounds.
