Matthew accessed our prison services. This is his Story in his own words
Prior to engaging with the EDP team my life seemed to be a never ending cycle of drink and drug abuse. I am 32 and I have been in and out of prison since the age of 17 due to my behaviour while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
I always wanted to stop using but I found that regardless of how hard I tried I couldn’t seem to kick the habit. That was until I engaged with the drugs team within the prison and since then my life has improved significantly. I’m on a path that seems to be getting better and my life in general has gone from being quite negative and dull to very positive, with quite a clear direction of the future that I would like to build for myself upon release.
At first I referred myself to the CARAT team (EDP’s prison service at the time) and began to work with a key worker on a one-to-one basis. From there I attended classes which I found very helpful because I felt the facilitators understood and I could relate to other group members who had had almost identical experiences to me and which had resulted in families and relationships breaking down and also time spent in prison. Since then I have completed several interventional programmes and as a result my life has completely changed. One of the most recent programmes that I have completed is P-ASRO (A programme which used to be offered by EDP). I found it very engaging and took a great deal from it. The way it was facilitated and delivered played a huge part in that.
Even though I finished the P-ASRO programme a while ago I regularly see the course facilitator and I know that the support is still there.
“There was a time when I couldn’t imagine a life without alcohol and drugs. Now, with thanks to the drug teams within the prison, I have found a new direction, and one that my family are supportive of. I couldn’t have done it without EDP.”
