EDP supports Petroc to secure funding to ‘Build Better Opportunities’ for young people across Devon

EDP Drug & Alcohol Services supports Petroc to secure funding to ‘Build Better Opportunities’ for young people across Devon

EDP Drug & Alcohol Services has been successful, as part of a partnership bid led by Further Education College Petroc, with a stage one application for the ‘Building Better Opportunities’ programme in Devon.

‘Building Better Opportunities’ is a project jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund.

Petroc and its partners will use the initial development grant from the Big Lottery Fund to plan and co-design a programme of activity for 18-24 year olds who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). Called ‘Empowering Enterprise’, the programme will seek to engage over 600 of Devon’s most socially-excluded young people and work with them to develop their employability and life skills giving them the confidence to return to employment, education or training.

Petroc’s partners have a wealth of experience of working with the socially excluded and include public and private sector organisations, charities and community interest companies from across the county. As a key part of the co-design process, the partnership will be consulting with the young people who will benefit from the programme to make sure that the activity really will address the barriers they face and empower them to improve their prospects. In addition, the partnership will also work closely with the Heart of the South West LEP, JobCentre Plus, Devon County, Plymouth City and Torbay Councils, and Devon District Councils to make sure that the programme meets the needs of the local economy.

This detailed programme plan will then form a stage two bid which, if successful, will allow Petroc’s partnership to access £2.4 million in funding to deliver the programme for over two years from Spring 2017.

Huw Davies, Assistant Principal at Petroc, said “We and our partners are delighted to be working with the Big Lottery Fund. We believe our partnership is capable of making a difference to hundreds of marginalised young people across Devon, helping them to realise their potential.”

Charlotte Burrows, Director of Innovation and Growth at EDP Drug & Alcohol Services said “We are thrilled to be working with Petroc and the Big Lottery Fund. It gives us an opportunity to work with some of the hardest to reach young people in our area and deliver real positive change.”
