What a Day!
A tale of fundraising, family and fresh air
by Lucie Hartley – CEO of EDP Drug & Alcohol Services
I was counting my blessings this Saturday (February 2nd). Aside from the 5.30am start, it was a stunning day, I spent the day in a beautiful location in South Devon and my son (Liam) and 3 colleagues (Nathan, Marcus and Graham) were doing a sponsored run for EDP.
I’d never heard of the South Devon marathon before. According to the website it’s a ‘cult classic’ and the first of the Coastal Trails. It’s described as ‘simultaneously picturesque and punishing’. Seems an accurate description – as all four runners reported how beautiful and how incredibly challenging their runs were. The challenge came with the narrow, muddy, rocky paths and steep ascents around the coastline.
They all did different runs – Nathan did the Ultramarathon (34 miles!), Graham did the marathon, Liam the half marathon and Marcus the 10k. They were all total stars, meeting and overcoming a range of challenges to finish, including having a bad cold, not having the right shoes and wanting to give up at various points along the way!
They’ve already raised over £5,000 and they’ve said there is still more sponsorship to come. Most of the amount they have raised (all the ‘online payments’) will be doubled by their employer. It was great to see them all in their EDP running tops and Liam and Marcus did a short interview for the event organisers, plugging EDP. Fingers crossed this will be on the event website when the photos are up and will give more profile to our charity. Thanks to everyone who sponsored them!
