Welcome review of drinking guidelines
In line with a recent report by the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, MPs are recommending that people have at least two days completely free of alcohol every week.
The report urges a review of current drinking guidelines and states that promoting two alcohol-free days should help to “enforce the message that drinking every day should be avoided".

The report follows on from research published in early January which looks at the impact of minimum pricing for alcohol. The study found that “a 10 percent increase in the minimum price of an alcoholic beverage leads to a more than 16 percent decrease in its consumption compared to other beverages”. Researchers believe that this may in turn lead to a reduction in the harm caused by alcohol.

Lucie Hartley, Chief Executive of EDP, welcomed the review of drinking guidelines and commented that she was “encouraged by sources which suggest that minimum pricing is being considered by the government for inclusion in the impending new alcohol strategy”.
